| Coming down the mountain is easier to most climbers, but for me with a bad ankle and a bad knee it was a bit difficult but worth it. |
During the Inca times... They built a trail up the side of Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top. The peak of Huayna Picchu is about 2,720 metres (8,920 ft) above sea level, or about 360 metres (1,180 ft) higher than Machu Picchu.
You will find magnificent spots to rest and take pictures and always observing Machu Picchu down below. You will never forget these views for as long as you live.
Recommendations:
- Get up very early in the morning. You can take advantage of the 7:00 AM group (first group). The next group will go up at 11:00 AM. You are expected to be down by 2:00 PM.
- Bring with you and drink plenty of water.
- Rest a lot at all times, and enjoy the scenery. Do not worry about a thing just enjoy your climb.
- Protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes.
- Do not carry much, a slight backpack is enough with some snacks and water.
- Listen to the birds and crickets.
- Watch for condors, I hope it will be your lucky day and you see one flying over Machu Picchu.
- You will be entertained by the flora, very exotic flowers on your way and unusual plants.
- Fauna... I am very scared of snakes, but I didn't see any and nobody mentioned anything. But, I saw lizzards and they were very friendly.
- Just follow the crowd and everybody will get there.
- Once up there, relax and take lots of pictures and take your time coming down the mountain.
A good side note:
People coming down the mountain will greet you in every language you can think of... The ones that speak English will give you support advise and they will tell you that you are just 10 minutes away from the top... This will be told by everyone you pass by, but then it doesn't matter because everybody will celebrate with you up there..!
If you are staying for the night in Machu Picchu city (Aguas Calientes town), make sure you visit the natural springs, this will help you to relax and decrease the pain of your legs if any... You will sleep like a log that night.
Have a wonderful climb...
